51 Product Selection SAFETY AND MAINTENANCE ABRASIVES SINGLE SIDED TAPES PACKAGING ADHESIVES DOUBLE COATED TAPES All abrasives are a product of three basic elements-Minerals, Bonding methods and Backings. The five types of minerals used as abrasive coatings are:- Aluminium Oxide a synthetic mineral with a tough structure, used in both woodworking and metalworking applications Silicon Carbide Hard, sharp and friable, used for sanding paint, lacquer, plastics and glass Garnet A naturally occurring mineral well suited to hand sanding operations Zirconia A tough, sharp synthetic mineral with a self-sharpening characteristic, suitable for heavy grinding 3M Cubitron Mineral A tough long lasting mineral, with a unique “stay sharp” microscopic crystalline structure. There are four principle types of adhesive bonds which consist of varying glues, resins and combinations to impart heat or water resistance. Backings are invariably Paper, Synthetic fibre cloth, or Vulcanised fibres and will often include grinding aids to lubricate and reduce heat generation. Specialised Abrasive Systems 3M Stikit™ a self adhesive fixing system which ensures sheets remain firmly in place to Stikit accessories whilst in use, but are easy to apply and quick to remove 3M Hookit™ A hook and loop fixing system, which means that products can be attached and reattached as many times as necessary 3M Roloc™ a quick release mechanism based on a unique thread requiring half a turn for ON or OFF plus a positive locking mechanism
